ATTY Award

Periodically, the Foundation names a recipient of the ATTY Award, given for positive depictions of an attorney in a novel, film, play, or TV show. The ATTY Award was inspired by the American Film Institute survey that attorney Atticus Finch the central character in Harper Lee's heralded classic To Kill a Mockingbird was considered the greatest hero in American cinematic history.

Author Harper Lee accepted “with deep gratitude” the 2005 inaugural ATTY Award. “Since Atticus Finch is an attorney, we felt that his selection as the greatest hero of cinematic history was a significant moment in American cultural history for our profession,” said Paul R. Rosen, president of the Foundation, “and we seized on it as the building block of a tradition. Harper Lee, author of the Pulitzer-Prize-winning novel which became the Academy-Award-winning film, was the perfect choice for the inaugural award.”

Actor Robert Prosky received the ATTY in 2008 for his moving portrayal of pro bono attorney Hilton Barber in the acclaimed film Dead Man Walking.
